When to prune a fig tree

Recommended Posts

Everything I’ve read says to prune your fig tree when it’s dormant.  My tree lost all of it’s leaves from the frost we had in early December, but it did not go dormant.  It immediately sent out green shoots. Should I prune it anyway? The tree is about 8 feet tall. I’m in zone 9A, just south of I-210 in Lake Charles.

I agree with Fred. We should  get some colder in Jan. or Feb. to make them go really dormant. Pruning now could encourage new growth that would only be hurt if we get some really cold temps later.
